Tilde Welcomes Miki and Nora Jewelry

There's nothing like a good old fashioned golden nugget! This one just happens to be handmade, and even though its not 'solid' gold, we love it nonetheless. We have added a new designer to the Tilde ranks: Miki Christopherson. Her line Miki and Nora focuses on simple geometric shapes fabricated in silver, oxidized silver and antiqued gold. Lovely, precious and refreshing clean design. Her pieces strike me as the everyday 'basic' that are far more fetching than anything basic, and eventually end up being one of your favorites. Nugget or Pyramid? Or perhaps Octahedron

Sahlia Michelle Jewelry at Tilde!

Earlier this summer, I met with Sahlia at her lovely little studio located right here in Portland. She has a gorgeous setup that functions as a perfect gallery space (by appointment) and she also does her creating there.  Her line is forever growing as she keeps adding new designs. All her pieces work beautifully together and create quite the effect when layered. This talented artist has a great eye for design and we are thrilled to be carrying her work at Tilde.

I chose pieces from the "torched' and 'rocks and chains' collections and also some designs from a brand new collection! If there are wedding bells in your future, be sure to check out her stunning bridal line although it is not currently available at Tilde.

Portland is no stranger to great design, but this jewelry line is truly a standout! She has gotten significant recognition from local favorites  The Neat Sheet, MOD and Crave to name a few. Sahlia's designs are just the right combination of edgy and delicate paired with feminine flair. I threw caution to the wind and picked up one of her beautiful "Gunmetal Whisper" necklaces (above, lower left) and couldn't be happier.

Kamal: Art on Paper

Another installment from the National Stationary Show. The Kamal line is based in Richmond, Virginia and produced 100% in our fair nation using 100% luxurious cotton paper or 100% kraft chipboard with 100% PC kraft envelopes! Needless to say, we are 100% in love…

These cards are just plain amazing: gorgeous colors, simple elegant design with sumptuous paper and letterpress printing to boot! We are totally smitten with her cards, but she also creates wrapping paper, coasters and custom invites as well.

Stop in for a peak; we have lots of different colors and designs. Is there someone you have been meaning to send a card to? Receiving a handwritten note is divine!  Or, if you are on the hunt for something lovely to frame, a few of these cards would look cheerful in any room.

Leah Nobilette Ceramics

Leah Nobilette, a Portland OR ceramic artist (and our good friend!), developed her extremely popular line of hand-made spiked bowls and vases when finishing her college thesis in 2004. We don’t know anyone that can walk by one of Leah’s ceramic pieces without reaching out to touch them. This unique product line is not just functional, but uniquely decorative and pleasingly tactile. The fragile-looking spiky exteriors are surprisingly sturdy and dishwasher safe.

Leah is a new mom to a beautiful little girl!  On top of that, she has just completed relocating her ceramic studio into her home to make it a tad easier to create whenever she can steal a moment or two away from her baby.  Aware of all this, we were amazed that she was recently able to restock us with more of her vases. How she found the time is a feat of the unknown. Thank you Leah!

August First Friday Artist: Rachael Donaldson

We couldn’t be more thrilled that we nabbed Portland artist Rachael Donaldson for our upcoming August art show. As this show is just around the corner we wanted to give you a sneak peak of the intricate and tactile paintings that will grace our walls next month. Rachael has created a body of work entitled ‘Terra,’ Latin for earth or land. The paintings are unbelievably striking in person drawing you in with their texture and depth. Featured here are a few of the pieces that will be on our walls. Rachael graduated from Evergreen College in Olympia, WA with a Fine Arts degree. She is a painter, self-taught jeweler and a novice potter. Her successful jewelry line, Demimonde, can be found here at Tilde as well as several select shops in the Portland area and beyond.

★ Please join us for Rachael Donaldson’s artist reception on Friday, August 6th from 6-9pm.

bright designlab on design*sponge!

Congratulations to the lovely ladies of bright designlab, who were featured on the ever so popular blog: design*sponge. You might not recognize their faces, (aren’t they the cutest!)  but if you have been in the shop recently, you’ve probably noticed their whimsical and expertly constructed terrariums.

These ladies are hard at work on a whole slew of projects,  one of which is a line of up-cycled furniture that they designed with local re-modeling company Hammer and Hand. Did you see them at the Mississippi Street Fair? I opted for a trip to the beach that weekend, but I hear it was a great event! Its so nice to see talented designers get the recognition they deserve. Bravo!

He is the winner of the Dan Stiles Poster Give-Away and the lucky owner of a new Spoon poster. Thanks to everyone who entered! The Dan Stiles show will be up at Tilde until the end of July, so if you didn’t win, there is still time to pick up a cool poster of your own.

Bright Designlab Terrariums

One of Tilde’s amazing designers was featured on Design*Sponge today for their fantastic upcycled shelving systems. We may not carry these bigger pieces, but we do have their magical, otherworldly terrariums for sale in the shop. Check out the Portland wonder that is Bright Designlab!

Their terrariums are created using locally grown succulents and are accented with interesting moss, rocks and tiny characters. Their goal: to make you smile. They achieve this goal–look how wonderful their work is!

This fun bull terrarium is entitled “Wonder Bread Bull” because there are little reclaimed pieces of an old Wonder Bread building integrated into the design. So clever.

Bright Designlab, featuring graphic, floral, interior design and photography services, is made up of two talented and lovely ladies. After a short stint working together at an interior design firm, Leela and Alissa paired up and struck out on their own to open bright designlab in the fall of 2009. They are LEED accredited and are committed to maintaining a small carbon footprint and working with local craftspeople.

Orla has a unique, immediately recognizable design language, developed through graphic patterns that celebrate her optimistic spirit. As down-to-earth as her designs are popular, the key to what drives Orla is her fixation on the evolution of a signature style, devotion to quality and practicality.

Artist Interview: Jessica Swift

You might recognize this playful, colorful style from several of the prints in our shop. We have carried Jess Swift's prints for over a year now.  I am totally in love with her beautifully patterned characters and am slowly acquiring a collection of her work. (I need a bigger house with more wall space!) She has always been so great to work with, so I thought it would be fun to learn a bit more about the artist behind the work! We knew she was talented, but it turns out, she is multi-talented. Not only is she a prolific visual artist, (surface designer, painter, and illustrator) but she is also musical and a french-speaker too. How cool! A big thank-you to her for all her wonderful work and for sharing more about herself.

Tell us a little about your background  and how you got to be where you are now.

I grew up in Boulder, Colorado, and I’ve been making stuff since before I can remember. I went to Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY and majored in art. I was conflicted for a long time about whether I wanted to be an artist or a musician for a living; throughout college and for a couple years afterwards I was a singer/songwriter, and I created artwork as well. I entered a juried competition with my art when I was 23 years old, I ended up getting accepted. The show was a huge success, and I realized I could make a living as an artist. I never looked back, and I’ve put all my effort into being a working artist since then.

What kind of sources do you draw on for inspiration?

A lot of my inspiration comes from nature, or more exactly, from being IN nature. I get my best ideas when I’m out walking. If I’m ever feeling stuck, the surest way to get unstuck is to go walking outdoors. I’m also very inspired by organic shapes and patterns in nature. Inspiration is everywhere. I can be inspired by colors on a sign that I’ve never thought to put together, or an idea that comes to me out of the blue. My eyes and ears are always open. Another important practice for me as far as inspiration goes is just doing my work and not waiting for inspiration to strike. Often once I’ve started working, the inspiration will come naturally. Sometimes I don’t think I’d ever start if I waited for inspiration to come!

What artists do you admire?

There are so many!

Egon Schiele: for his expressive faces and gestures, and the moodiness of his portraits.

Olle Eksell: He was so versatile in his time, and his illustrations are so playful and inventive.

Kat MacLeod: Her work is just simply beautiful and genius.

Hilary Williams: I saw her work in person in San Francisco several years ago, and I fell in love with it immediately. I think it’s just gorgeous!

Lucienne Day: I love her playful use of color and pattern; and I’m also inspired that she was one of the few female pioneers of the mid-century surface design style!

What advice do you have for young artists trying to find their way out there?

My main advice is to NEVER STOP and to make as much artwork as you can. Also, I got this piece of advice from a professor of mine in college that I’ll never forget: “you have to be willing to make the bad work in order to make the good work.” I always remember that when I make something that’s just ugly or doesn’t work at all. You have to move through the bad to get to the good!

Do you have any plans for future shows, bodies of work or long term projects?

I’m going to have a solo show of my work at Assemble in Seattle, WA in December and I’ll have a booth at the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago this September, but that’s it for shows for me at this point. I’ll be starting to prepare for Surtex in May 2011 towards the end of the year as well; that’ll be my main focus for a while!
