Eco-conscious Urban Junket tote bags
We are quite excited to have found a new handbag line that is uber-convertible, ultra eco-conscious, and totally stylish to boot! Tracy Dyer is the brains behind Urban Junket bags and wanted to create a functional handbag, made from durable materials and designed with efficiency in mind to allow you to stay “organized while protecting your treasures during the daily journeys that define your life.”
She created the T.O.T.E. (To Observe The Earth) collection made from 70% recycled materials. 100% cotton canvas and an eco-friendly dying process is used to create the rich colors of the bags exterior. We love that RPET fabric is used for all of their lining material. RPET is made from recycled plastic bottles that undergo high temperature washing and sterilization before being made into thread which is then dyed using non-toxic vegetable dyes.
Yes, these bags are eco-awesome, but they also look cool and have a ton of functional/organizational pockets inside to meet your needs as you jet about your busy day. You can use the hip blue snaps to change the bag from a work tote to a shoulder bag to a boxy handbag, depending on your mood and need. T.O.T.E. bags even comes with an additional cross-body strap so you can really make tracks without fear of dropping your stuff.
Urban Junket’s mantra is to “combine inspired and unique styling with everyday functionality. We know it can be done and we don’t believe that anyone should have to sacrifice one for the other.” We totally agree.
Not to boost your expectations, but stop by Tilde to see some Urban Junket bags up-close-and-personal-like. We have them in a ton of colors. Betcha won’t want to leave without one!

Amy Wing’s elegant jewelry shines
Ready for some fall bling? Local fave Amy Wing designs jewelry from silver and gold that is hammered to perfection. Designs include her classic hammered circle necklace in both metals. The circle theme continues in a variety of other necklaces all featuring – you got it! – the circle.
Amy also uses sparkly gemstones in her designs, and we’ve got some of her pieces that feature multi-faceting gems of green garnet, rutilated quartz, and lemon quartz hanging from a small silver circle on a delicate chain. And, of course, we have matching earrings for all.
Inspired by nature and simple, elegant shapes, Amy “makes pieces that are fashionable without being trendy in order to capture a unique and timeless quality.” She often had difficulty finding unique pieces for herself, and was so motivated to create unusual designs that really stand out among the mass-produced stuff out there. Natural beauty that enhances or reflects one’s personality, feels and looks warm on the skin, and becomes classic on its own is what you’ll undoubtedly see in her designs, designs you’ll surely covet.

materious: sweet porcelain piggies are here
The high concept, high design duo that is materious brings us all to a higher plane with artifacts from our world that inspire and delight. With international exhibitions, awards, and press, materious is a force to be reckoned with.
Tilde now possesses the must-have gift of the season: Piggy, a philanthropic piggy bank set for kids of all ages. The minimalist design made of hand-cast ceramic is presented in two savings banks (pink or white) that nest together. The larger “momma Piggy” bank is for your child’s personal savings while the smaller bank is for your child’s charitable savings (or, vice versa!).
The cool people at materious believe that this modern, elegant set can truly help raise awareness and make the world a more compassionate place, as “Piggy helps teach kids about charitable giving, with the hopes of inspiring new generations of caring, sharing, philanthropic citizens”. This conscientious design team notes that “with 12,000 children born each day in the US, imagine the social impact if just a fraction of them learned powerful lessons of gratefulness and kindness to others”. We wholeheartedly agree. Parents can suggest that children set aside 10% of their savings for others, teach them about giving, philanthropy, and altruism, and empower them to make decisions about recipients of their gift.
Perfect for that special someone, perfect for the upcoming gift giving season, the Piggy set ships safely in a fun “quote box” with powerful favorites like:
If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. The Dalai Lama
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. Winston Churchill
I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver. Maya Angelou
It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it. Albert Einstein
Claim your piggy duo while they’re in the shop! The designer’s sold out of these guys quickly so once they are gone, they are gone for the rest of the year.

October First Friday Artist: Rachel Austin
We are so delighted to, once again, be working with the creative Rachel Austin who will be the feature artist at Tilde for October. Rachel has put together a series of rain drawings inspired by the actual wet, drippy, rain we all know so well in the Pacific Northwest—from the cozy feeling we get from it to the feeling that we are being pursued by it. Presented in mixed media format, her Raindrop artwork was created with cutouts of tiny paper raindrops from a variety of found paper. This tiny rainstorm is brought to life on paper combined with Rachel’s original watercolor and pencil designs.
Always passionate about creating new, beautiful things, Rachel began her career as an artist building tables and went on to study woodworking at the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts. With this unique crafts perspective, she soon gathered books full of sketches and began creating a growing body of paintings. Her signature works range from oil paintings to map paintings to watercolor seed paintings, and have become a standard part of the Portland arts world, displayed in shows across town. Her background in woodworking influences her design size choices as she creates her own frames and canvasses, too.
Her art was a part-time endeavor to begin, but with enormous Etsy success, she took the plunge and began creating art full time. It wasn’t too long after this business leap that her husband Jon was able to quit his day job to manage Rachel’s growing business in Portland, Oregon. The duo works at the home studio, which is more than convenient since their cute two year old, Adelaide, needs to be chased around and showered with plenty of mini bear hugs throughout the day.
Rachel continues to explore a number of themes with her paintings. Many of her current works resonate with a sense of the simple beauty found in the spare and innocent scenes of everyday life.
★ Please join us for Rachel Austin’s artist reception on Friday, October 1st from 6-9pm.

Odette charms (for) us all
Jewelry design sensation Odette has created beautiful handmade charms to adorn your wrists and necks. Silver, gold, and rose gold are metals that add bling to the natural world – whales, bees, mushrooms all dazzle and delight!

Tilde is bringing in a large selection of her charm necklaces from The Petit collection which features all the same signature Odette detail on a smaller, charming scale. A national sensation, currently we are the only shop in Portland carrying Odette's sweet jewelry.
The Odette New York jewelry line is inspired by organic and industrial shapes, natural specimens, antique artifacts, and travel mementos. The designer crafts these forms using ancient and modern wax carving techniques and hand fabrication. The designs begin from inspired ideas that morph into pencil sketches that are translated to wax forms and then cast into metal. Classic with a slightly bohemian touch, these handmade works display Odette's organic signature aesthetic.
Jennifer Sarkilahti is the artist behind Odette New York who makes magic happen from her Brooklyn studio. Virginia-bred Sarkilahti has a backgroun in fine arts, and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from George Mason University. Fusing her fine art sensibilities with a love of fashion, Sarkilahti launched Odette New York in 2006.
Since launching, Odette New York has been steadily featured in national magazines like Lucky, InStyle, and People StyleWatch, worn by celebrities like Taylor Swift, and sold at distinctive boutiques around the globe – New York, Los Angeles, Australia, Paris, Tokyo, and now Portland (exclusively at your fave shop, of course!).

Goodbye to dear neighbor Vino Wine Shop
With the heaviest of hearts, we bid adieu to our good friend Bruce Bauer and his immensely popular wine shop Vino. Saturday, September 18th will be his last day of business in his current location. After 10+ years of business in Sellwood, Bruce will relocate his wine shop to NE 28th Avenue, a few blocks south of Burnside. This new venue is slated to open in November.
In the days (weeks, months) prior to Tilde opening our doors—as we toiled away inside painting, refinishing the floor, and completing all those unpleasant tasks necessary to open a business—Bruce became one of our first friends in the neighborhood. We remember one endless day of painting when we heard a rhythmic metal sound coming from outside. Taking a break and wandering outside our back door to find the source, we stumbled upon Bruce sitting in a lawn chair roasting a pig in his backyard with some friends. His happy smile and succulent looking roast piggie said all we needed to know about our friendship with our new neighbor.
Throughout the years Bruce has never stopped supporting our business and has actually played a huge role in the growth of Tilde by sharing customers and ‘pimping our biz’, as he says. We, in turn, have pimped him right back, for Vino is truly one of the gems Portland has to offer. With a curated selection of affordable wine, Bruce has introduced us to favorites that we return to again and again.
Vino has always been a neighborhood gathering place every Friday evening for the renowned $10 wine tastings. That nominal price gets you five pours, which is an awesome way to be introduced to Bruce’s wine grouping of the week. Every neighbor we know in Sellwood and Westmoreland stops by Vino on a Friday night, with a snack or two to enjoy with the tasting. During these lively gatherings, we’ve watched neighbors meet neighbors and friends meet friends as all sip together at large communal tables.
Don’t miss the Vino inventory clearance sale to go along with the usual wine sampling fun on Saturday, Sept 18th. The sale will be 20% off all remaining inventory and applies only to stock on hand and wines purchased this Saturday. To add to this ‘see ya, not goodbye’, Bruce will also be offering up some choice wines to sample free of charge. Always a sure way to guide a weekend day along the right path.
Though we’ll miss Bruce’s daily wave and smile, and Chopper’s wagging tail, we look forward to visiting him in his new swanky digs on NE 28th. You can follow Vino on Twitter and through his blog, plus we’ll keep everyone posted on the re-opening of Vino as soon as the news hits the airwaves.
Tilde’s Anniversary Sale & Party – September 18th
Join us in the shop on Saturday, September 18th from 10 am until 8 pm as we celebrate our fourth anniversary. You’ll enjoy special sale prices (20% off!) on almost everything in the store and in our online shop and—even better—we’ll be offering a custom gift from Studio Olivine. Why not grab a friend and make an afternoon of it in Sellwood?
We will be serving up Blue Kangaroo coffee all day long, nibbles from Fleur de Lis Bakery, and starting at 4pm, will happily be pouring bubbly procured from Vino. It’s time to party!
We thank all our customers for four fast, fab, and fun-filled years of patronage. Because of you, our store has enjoyed great success, and we hope to continue this trend by bringing unique design, art, and accessories for your home, your friends, and, of course, you.
★ Stop by on Saturday, September 18th to celebrate with us!

Orla Kiely handbags: Calling all collectors – last shipment ’til 2011
Famed handbag designer Orla Kiely is modifying the way she releases her handbag line after the final shipment for Fall/Winter 2010. Perhaps because she wants to keep us even higher up on our tippy toes, or perhaps because she enjoys watching us whimper, her next release of new prints and handbags will not be until sometime in February 2011. Therefore, the large shipment we just received this week(!) of her 2010 line is that much more covetable, so if you are a collector (which many of you in Stumptown are!), you’re going to want to get in the store and grab a bag before they’re gone. You’re not going to see anything new from Orla until the beginning of spring next year.
But, don’t freak out! We’ve got plenty of bags in stock for you – the Alpine design collection is pure Oregon in a grey, brown, and deep green, and this latest shipment of her textural tonal stem design will surely tide you over until spring.
