Candyspotting
You know we just love all sorts of paper products – so you also can guess how happy we were when we stumbled upon a fab paper designer from our very own hood. Not just a paper designer, but a paper cutter. Sounds dangerous? It’s not. It’s cutting-edge cool!
Candyspotting is the business of Sarah Holbrook (currently operating out of a home workshop in our very own Portland), who grew up on a small island near Vancouver surrounded by dreamers and artists. After earning her BSc in computer science she spent six years in the Bay Area working with a variety of artists. Returning to the Pacific Northwest to start a family, she launched Candyspotting in 2009 which combines her love of technology and art, beautifully connected in all pieces she creates.

Amy Sacks Eyewear
Three cheers for beautiful eyeglasses! We have long searched for the most perfect frames around. Frames that “go beyond necessity and speak to a customer’s personality and aesthetic.” And, we just happened to have stumbled upon this frame right here in our fair city of Portland. Amy Sacks Eyewear is an independent eyewear company that champions color, fit, and quality in every frame.

In addition to designing totally adorable frames, their entire business model supports animal rescue, adoption, and low cost veterinary services through the Pixie Project. This speaks to our hearts as we are lovers of cats and dogs everywhere (except perhaps that crazy cat next door). Every Amy Sacks Eyewear purchase helps provide food, shelter, and medical care to animals in need.

We have a great selection of both sunglasses and readers. Did we mention all their frames have a lifetime warranty? This company rocks.

SBiR Rings
Whenever you’d like to call major attention to your hand, grab one of these rings! Cause they are So Big it’s Ridiculous.
The SBiR series offers unapologetic forms in vibrant colors that are flexible, durable, and shockingly comfortable. These rings are a playful conversation piece and are fit for a superhero of design. For this Seattle based design duo, the sum has always been greater than the parts. The challenge and excitement of working on projects in a vast variety of scales and subjects led to the founding of fruitsuper design in 2008.

Imm Living
This design group based in the eclectic downtown core of Toronto addresses notions of the past and present in all its creations. Drawing from the traditional and popular cultures of our world, imm living creates designs that marry functionality with a playful sensibility. (A great description of a Tilde product!) Our current favorite – the Jackalope jewelry holder (of course) – a creature friendly, cuddly, and a bit fearsome. Not fearsome enough, however, to entrust to happily hold your jewelry and other treasures on your nightstand or vanity table.

We also fell in love with their animal mugs. At first glance, this big, ceramic cup seems innocent enough, but as you drain your beverage, waiting for you inside is a cute and cuddly creature. Perhaps these creatures are not the best hiders after all – in an attempt to stay camouflaged, these little critters forgot about their tails. We enjoy having these wonderful items from imm living spend time with us in store. Though we know they would be equally happy spending time with you as well, if you’ll let them.

Tilde’s Window’s on MSNBC
We were *beyond thrilled* to be chosen by MSNBC for a feature on window displays. The show is called Your Business – a program which specializes on topics of interest to independent businesses. The MSNBC team flew out from New York to film us discussing our take on the importance of window displays. They also filmed us installing one of our fab window displays (which they then ran in super-speed – how cool is that?).
How’d Tilde get on the MSNBC radar, you ask? We were referred by Linda Cahan, a national expert on window display and merchandising, who also was featured in the show offering viewers terrific advice. The Tilde team worked diligently to create a window that showed products and our super crafty Tilde style. Our ten minutes of fame caught on film – and, for you to view right here.

Polli wooden jewelry
This season the Polli designs are influenced by indigenous patterning found around the world. With the popularity of their sustainable wooden collection last year (all those cool brooches!) we are really excited to bring in their newest wooden necklaces and earrings.
Made locally in their Australian studio using sustainable plantation hoop ply pine, these pieces are finished with quality findings and coated cotton cord. The printing process allows for the addition of color in many of their classic designs, and for the exploration of new patterns, too. The new beaded necklaces are designed to be worn in a variety of ways with adjustable lengths and plain colors on the reverse side of the beads.

Vitrifiedstudio
This tiny home based ceramics studio was started by Shelley Martin a year ago in Northeast Portland. We love her simple forms and muted glaze colors paired with the exposed unglazed clay body. As a collector of gadgets, we just knew we had to have these amazing bottles with big corks. And, we definitely could not pass on her lovely wine tumblers!
Using the potter’s wheel, Shelley works with five types of stoneware and porcelain. While trained in architecture school at Virginia Tech, Shelley also found time to study ceramics. She is currently focusing on ceramics and construction management, splitting her time between working for a local homebuilder, Hammer and Hand, and vitrifiedstudio. With these endeavors, Shelley finds a balance between handcrafted well-made homes and functional ceramic wares. (She also finds balance in sharing her back yard with a chicken coop, a gigantic Doug Fir tree and two dogs, Lily and Arthur.)

Julianna Swaney: art reception Friday night!
We hope you can join us this Friday, April 6th from 6-9pm for the opening reception for the newest artwork of Julianna Swaney of Portland, OR. This show features her original pencil and watercolor pieces centered around themes of guides, guardians and caretakers. All artwork is available for purchase both in our shop and our online website. The show runs through May 31st.
Julianna Swaney was born in Michigan and grew up playing outside in the woods with her dogs and cats, going on family vacations to historical sites and bird watching, and visiting antique stores, all of which continue to be an influence on her work. Because books were always very important in her house, she developed an early fondness for fairytales and magic that could be found in the real world via nature and history. Motivated to create, Swaney received her BFA from Maine College of Art in 2005, and since then has shown her work in galleries around the country. Her illustrations appear in several magazines, including Martha Stewart Weddings, Uppercase, and Tin House, as well as in a recent book. This inspired Portland, Oregon transplant continues to make a living from her artwork.

Fairytales and folktales let people like Swaney understand a universe that could be confusing and frightening, but is also beautiful and mysterious. As a child, she believed that everything—animals, trees, rocks—had a voice, and that if we just listen closely, these beings can serve as sage guides. Swaney lets us access her guides through her artwork, connecting us to a human element that is essential to our understanding of the non-human world. In her paintings, facts intermingle with traces of lingering echoes of childhood memories, of folklore, and of fairy tales.

Windows that WOW!
We’ve had quite an adventure this past week! Tilde was filmed for a segment of the MSNBC television show ‘Your Business’ (runs on Sunday morning). We fit the bill for an independent business with some interesting window displays. (Who knew? Someone did!) In addition to interviewing both me and Joanna, a camera was mounted in the window capturing us as we put one of our windows up. Yup. Reality show on window design and display, from start to finish. We were nervous but pretty excited, too! Quite an honor. We were referred by Linda Cahan, a national expert on window displays, which was an honor in itself. (Thanks, Linda!) And, for all of you just chomping at the bit to see us in Technicolor action, this 30-minute show will air in May.

For these windows, we tried to keep it simple, with color blocking on the window and sewn together in strips hanging from the ceiling. We pulled the color scheme from one of the handbags in store. We visited our favorite vintage shop and put together some great furniture, too – the best from previous decades (these chairs are from 1930). What fun!

This little table ensemble plays with the same colors. And isn’t Mr. Deer (the jewelry holder) pretty awesome? We think so.
