Vitrifiedstudio

There is nothing like a beautiful  ceramic vessel. And, the clay work by Shelley Martin of Vitrifiedstudio is some of the finest we’ve seen. Her straight-sided pots topped with a big cork seem perfect for storing almost anything you can dream up. The black and white glazes will fit right into anyone’s modern, cozy home. All the work from this studio is designed by Shelly, hand thrown, and made in limited batches.

As Shelley tells us: “Each piece is unique and made  only using my hands, the pottery wheel, a few simple tools, local clay, food safe glazes, and natural cork stoppers. The clay used is colored stoneware and porcelain, hand glazed, and fired in my kiln. The glazes are food safe and lead free. I really love that I am merely continuing a tradition that has been going on for thousands of years, making simple pots formed with my hands and clay, on the potter’s wheel.” We love this, too.

Native Union

Sometimes technology gets us down (sometimes a bit more often than we’d like). As many of you do, we find ourselves using smartphones more and more but remember fondly using the phones that use to sit on our desks (or counter at home) with an actual handset that just felt right. We recently were introduced to the communication design line from Native Union and knew all was good when we saw these colorful handsets.

Native Union was founded by Englishman John Brunner and Frenchman Igor Duc in 2009 with the concept of improving the experience of communication. These handsets connect to your smartphone, allow you navigate your phone while you talk, and reduce background noise for a crystal clear conversation. Plus, give us a break, they are super cool!

We have two styles of these handsets and if you are like us, you will have trouble choosing ’cause they are both so rad. One style was inspired by the 1950′s Bakelite phone (solid style all the way) and comes in solid bright colors. This handset uses Bluetooth technology – no wires! It feels great, sounds great, and looks great. The second style plugs into your phone through the headphone jack and conjures up the ’80s. You can’t go wrong with either choice.

Marquet Scarves

It wouldn’t be fall without a great scarf and David, from Marquet, offers some of the best scarves around. With three styles to choose from, tons of colors, super great prices, and all fair trade, we confess that we have more than a few of these in our personal collection. Marquet emphasizes the creativity of artisans and entrepreneurs in developing countries.

We’ve gotten to know David over the last few years and admire his respect for each artist’s cultural heritage and local traditions. These personal connections have allowed him to grow Marquet on the foundations of trust, respect, and mutual understanding as well as ensure that all of their goods are ethically sourced.

After years of receiving cute paper elephants in the mail as a thank you from David we decided to make these little guys our signature ornament for the holiday season this year. In a host of colors, these guys look great sitting on a table or just hanging out around your house.Tilde • 7919 SE 13th Ave • Portland, OR 97202

Kobo Candles – The Ribbon Collection

We are  suckers for a candle, especially as the weather changes to chilly. Lighting a good candle lets us feel as if we are pampering ourselves. The Ribbon Collection from KOBO is a delight for those who enjoy a beautifully designed product. The packaging alone is so beautiful that you’ll not want to wrap them when giving as gifts. Kobo candles are made of domestically grown sustainable soybeans which creates the cleanest burning wax and a notable, yet not exceedingly strong, level of fragrance. Cotton wicks provide a pure and clean flame. KOBO candles are not only created using environmentally friendly materials but also they do not pollute the home!

KOBO was created in 2006 by Junko Kobori.  Originally from Kumamoto in southern Japan, she and her husband spent many years traveling the world before settling in Saratoga Springs, NY. Junko was always struck by the scent of each place, and how absent those fragrances were when viewing a photo of a favorite location. While reminiscing on her travels, Junko noted that the specific aroma of a place was still very present to her memory. She came to realize that fragrance is one of the key elements to bringing any environment to life, and it is the most often overlooked. Junko began creating scents for her own home that would be as equally memorable to her family and guests as the paintings on the walls, or flavors of the food served. From this the KOBO range was born.

d.torso 3-D animals

This amazing 3-D penguin is your new BFF.  (There is a pig, giraffe, or rabbit, too, for the friending, if you’re so inclined.)

d.torso, a Japanese company, creates 3-D objects using computer generated “figurative images…[by dividing] the 3-D data into sliced data and then reconstruct it, using three axes of coordinates”. Kind of mind-blowing, but with sweet, whimsical results – animals that are perfect to entertain a puzzle person during that down time with the family, and as equally perfect to display in your home or office when the animal is complete.

Go on – have some holiday fun with 3-D antics!

QuarterTwenty

We instantly fell in love with this bottle opener, the Knucklehead, cause we like its rugged functionality, and know you will, too.

Yet another terrific Portland design group, Quartertwenty is led by Matthew Bietz and creates projects spanning furniture, installations, and buildings, exploring relationships between design, art, and production in their keen designs.

One of their smallest creations to date, the Knucklehead is the third product they have made from a single piece of steel used to create their GiddyUp stool. Its shelf slot is cut from the stool, resulting in a strip of steel that becomes a minimalist yet muscular bottle opener.

A perfect example of the reuse, recycle, reuse again model that we love. And, a totally perfect, handy gift for those holiday parties.

Chewing the Cud

If unwrapping the present is half the fun,  you’ll love the re-usable fabric gift wrap from the ladies at Chewing the Cud. We’ve carried their ingenious fabric wraps in the past, and they’re back just in time for the holidays.

Inspired by the traditional art of Japanese gift wrapping to advocate that your gift presentation should be as meaningful as your gift, each print is hand-printed on 100% organic cotton with soy-based inks. There are so many inventive ways to use this wrap–wrap boxes, bottles, book, jewelry, more. Whatever you wrap, this is your fabric. Your BFF receives a beautiful gift and presentation, and she can re-use it or wear it as a pretty scarf.

This is another awesome product that allows us to reuse and recycle. It’s so easy to include a wrapping ‘how-to’ card in your gift and those that receive gifts from you can re-wrap their next gift and keep the pretty fabric gift wrap going. We’re thinking this is the only way to adorn your gifts this holiday! Wrap it up with Chewing the Cud fabrics!
