Cathy McMurray

We just received a selection of  brand new, and oh so beautiful prints from local artist Cathy McMurray. The prints are from her original artwork, primarily paintings on wood panels that channel gorgeous naturescapes of mountains, oceans, trees, and other lovely features of the Oregon landscape.

Colorful, and a bit mystical, these prints sum up our feelings about the amazing place we call home.

Vitrifiedstudio

There is nothing like a beautiful  ceramic vessel. And, the clay work by Shelley Martin of Vitrifiedstudio is some of the finest we’ve seen. Her straight-sided pots topped with a big cork seem perfect for storing almost anything you can dream up. The black and white glazes will fit right into anyone’s modern, cozy home. All the work from this studio is designed by Shelly, hand thrown, and made in limited batches.

As Shelley tells us: “Each piece is unique and made  only using my hands, the pottery wheel, a few simple tools, local clay, food safe glazes, and natural cork stoppers. The clay used is colored stoneware and porcelain, hand glazed, and fired in my kiln. The glazes are food safe and lead free. I really love that I am merely continuing a tradition that has been going on for thousands of years, making simple pots formed with my hands and clay, on the potter’s wheel.” We love this, too.

Faune Yerby

Faune  started taking pictures seriously, not snaps, but what she thought of as “art/fashion” photos with her Kodak 110 when she was 15. She moved on to an Olympus 35mm SRL and haven’t put it down since! She has yet to embrace the digital age, and still use negatives, prints with chemicals, hand tones and hand colors her images. She loves the way an image looks on old photo paper. She draws inspiration from nature and architecture as well as 19th c. pictorial styles and specimen displays.

Faune’s art is mixed media photography, and collage . Using nineteenth-century photography techniques, and modern chemicals, she tries to evoke the beauty of nature and a bygone time. All photographs are original prints, which have been toned and hand colored. She uses recycled and sustainable materials when possible and all her pieces are handmade.

This artist/photographer lives in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA from San Francisco Art Institute and MFA from Rutgers University.

ryan berkley art show: showing until november 30th

Ryan Berkley – “Sophisticated Menagerie: The Oregon Collection”. This very popular show is showing on our walls through November 30th, so you still have time to see, and purchase, Ryan’s delightful artwork.  Included in this show are a number of new original works for the “Sophisticated Menagerie”, created with markers and colored pencil. The Berkley’s have also chosen a select group of archival prints of other Oregon favorites. (You might just recognize a few of the characters from your own backyard.)

His work has been described as “Norman Rockwell meets Richard Scarry” (which he found flattering enough to repeat!). Ryan’s animal portraits, coupled with Lucy Berkley’s animal bios, made a splash in April 2006 at the first Portland Crafty Wonderland art and craft show. That show’s “ancestor theme” for the Berkley booth was inspired by the couple’s love of animals and old-timey portraiture. The ancestor animals did so well at that first show that they’ve continued to evolve and multiply ever since. Berkley Illustration has lived on Etsy since 2007.

Ryan’s original artwork from this collection is available on our website too!

Kobo Candles – The Ribbon Collection

We are  suckers for a candle, especially as the weather changes to chilly. Lighting a good candle lets us feel as if we are pampering ourselves. The Ribbon Collection from KOBO is a delight for those who enjoy a beautifully designed product. The packaging alone is so beautiful that you’ll not want to wrap them when giving as gifts. Kobo candles are made of domestically grown sustainable soybeans which creates the cleanest burning wax and a notable, yet not exceedingly strong, level of fragrance. Cotton wicks provide a pure and clean flame. KOBO candles are not only created using environmentally friendly materials but also they do not pollute the home!

KOBO was created in 2006 by Junko Kobori.  Originally from Kumamoto in southern Japan, she and her husband spent many years traveling the world before settling in Saratoga Springs, NY. Junko was always struck by the scent of each place, and how absent those fragrances were when viewing a photo of a favorite location. While reminiscing on her travels, Junko noted that the specific aroma of a place was still very present to her memory. She came to realize that fragrance is one of the key elements to bringing any environment to life, and it is the most often overlooked. Junko began creating scents for her own home that would be as equally memorable to her family and guests as the paintings on the walls, or flavors of the food served. From this the KOBO range was born.

A D Busch re-BEAM planters

Re-BEAM Planters, created by Portland design company A D Busch, are made from recycled and reused header beams taken from construction sites and material recyclers. Each planter has a succulent arrangement inside, created by Rachel Busch. Each are different in size and plantings and can live indoors or out depending on the climate.

This local creative business uses raw material to enhance their custom craftsmanship, and strives to create work that evolves over time. Says founder Aaron D. Busch “When something is truly made to last, it shows the wear and presence of the people who use it, and that wear is what gives an object its character.”

Urubbu handcarved birds

We have long loved the  folk-like artwork created by Geraldo of Urubbu. In addition to Urubbu’s sweet and colorful images (sold as cards and prints in our shop) the gentlemen of Urubbu have been sourcing some of the most beautiful hand-carved and painted birds directly from the artisan in South America.

Antonio lives in a small village in Brazil, where he supports his family through his craft. Each one of these birds are hand-carved and painted from discarded and reclaimed wood. They are all unique. We want them  all – these little guys are more than a pop of color for your rooms – these birdies will become your friends and companions. We are already imaging them above our mantle and on our dresser……

Teroforma

The people of Teroforma, the design group behind the beloved Whisky Stones, brings us this elegant, smoky, mouth-blown crystal Avva Carafe. The focus on complementary angles is the perfect addition to their Avva Tumblers (pic above) and Whisky Lover set (pic below). Note the sweet beech wood stopper which doubles as a small bowl for drink garnishes, ice, or ….. Whisky Stones!

Their beautiful new handcrafted beach wood salt and pepper shakers are functional with a twist. Classy on any table – they truly earn their keep when you travel – as their ends are embedded with neodymium magnetic closures. Super cool. Now it’s a snap to travel to office, on a picnic, plane, train or spaceship.

The Teroforma design group places a commitment on quality which to them means “investing in the process as well as the finished product. It’s why they travel the world to search out uncommon talent they need to assist in bringing their design ideas to life. And it’s why they give direct, name credit to everyone they work with so that you have the chance to value not just the product you have in your hands but the story of the people behind it. ”
