Julianna Swaney: art reception Friday night!

We hope you can join us this Friday, April 6th from 6-9pm for the opening reception for the newest artwork of Julianna Swaney of Portland, OR. This show features her original pencil and watercolor pieces centered around themes of guides, guardians and caretakers. All artwork is available for purchase both in our shop and our online website. The show runs through May 31st.

Julianna Swaney was born in Michigan and grew up playing outside in the woods with her dogs and cats, going on family vacations to historical sites and bird watching, and visiting antique stores, all of which continue to be an influence on her work. Because books were always very important in her house, she developed an early fondness for fairytales and magic that could be found in the real world via nature and history. Motivated to create, Swaney received her BFA from Maine College of Art in 2005, and since then has shown her work in galleries around the country. Her illustrations appear in several magazines, including Martha Stewart Weddings, Uppercase, and Tin House, as well as in a recent book. This inspired Portland, Oregon transplant continues to make a living from her artwork.

Fairytales and folktales let people like Swaney understand a universe that could be confusing and frightening, but is also beautiful and mysterious. As a child, she believed that everything—animals, trees, rocks—had a voice, and that if we just listen closely, these beings can serve as sage guides. Swaney lets us access her guides through her artwork, connecting us to a human element that is essential to our understanding of the non-human world. In her paintings, facts intermingle with traces of lingering echoes of childhood memories, of folklore, and of fairy tales.

Windows that WOW!

We’ve had quite an adventure this past week! Tilde was filmed for a segment of the MSNBC television show ‘Your Business’ (runs on Sunday morning). We fit the bill for an independent business with some interesting window displays. (Who knew? Someone did!) In addition to interviewing both me and Joanna, a camera was mounted in the window capturing us as we put one of our windows up. Yup. Reality show on window design and display, from start to finish. We were nervous but pretty excited, too! Quite an honor. We were referred by Linda Cahan, a national expert on window displays, which was an honor in itself. (Thanks, Linda!) And, for all of you just chomping at the bit to see us in Technicolor action, this 30-minute show will air in May.

For these windows, we tried to keep it simple, with color blocking on the window and sewn together in strips hanging from the ceiling. We pulled the color scheme from one of the handbags in store. We visited our favorite vintage shop and put together some great furniture, too – the best from previous decades (these chairs are from 1930). What fun! This little table ensemble plays with the same colors. And isn’t Mr. Deer (the jewelry holder) pretty awesome? We think so.

PREVIEW: Julianna Swaney art show

The walls of our shop changes in a mere week to feature the artwork of Julianna Swaney. Hope you can join us for her opening reception Friday, April 6th from 6-9:00pm. Her work will be on our walls until May 31st. This show features pencil drawings and watercolors that connect with the themes of guides, guardians, and caretakers. Viewers will be delighted by scenes of people nurturing plants, girls being protected by huge dogs, and a few tricksters who may or may not be helpful to children lost in the woods. These images represent further exploration of the artist’s interest in plants and animals, the folklore we’ve created around them, and our deep connection to them.

Clava Handbags

EVEN. MORE. HANDBAGS. We  know. How can this be?! But it’s true. We discovered yet another line that we just have to have in the store. For three decades Clava has been designing sophisticated handbags. What began with one bag created in a college dorm room has evolved into a lifestyle brand. And, their new vegan handbag line blends casual sensibility with innovative textiles and exceptional design.

Argentine born, Claudio Vazquez, the brainchild behind Clava, designed his first bag at age 20. A world traveler and a student of all things design, he has employed a keen eye and tireless drive to continue to grow Clava. Mia Hur, who graduated with an art degree from NYU, has worked with Claudio for the last decade, offering slices of her classic personal style in every bag she designs for the line.

Orla Kiely Handbags

At long last, the complete shipment of all the very latest and greatest Orla handbags have arrived, which must certainly mean a new season is upon us. Our favorite of these new  patterns – the shadow stem print – is a classic Orla print with bright colors upon a black background.

Along with the beloved crossbody and shoulder bags, Orla has sent us a new tote, too. It’s pretty darn great. Big and roomy and sized horizontally to fit anything you might want to lug around with you, or even use as an overnight bag.

Her other two prints are super spring – super sun! And that’s just what we need as we still battle snowflakes and torrents of rain. Welcome spring with new handbags from Orla!

Laurent Olivier handmade barrettes

Oh, the fine French barrettes of Laurent Olivier. The colors, quality, and styles are beloved by all our friends. Each of these barrettes is handmade in France where these craftspeople create a mold for the barrette, mix the resin colors, and then hand-pour strong, flexible resin (similar to that used in eyeglasses) into the barrette mold. After it sets up, they brush some of the tops for texture and finish them off with the clasp.

Well made and gorgeous, indeed. We love, love, LOVE their classic filigree style, but now they are ‘wow’ing us with these super fun pinch clasps, perfect for all you girls who like to pull your hair up in a classy clasp. Just one of many styles in this beautiful barrette line.

Backpacks

For those of you currently bucking that crazy handbag trend, yet still need to figure out how to stylishly carry all your stuff around, we give you (drum roll, please!) the backpack. Hands-free anyone? It’s not just for cell phones – you know the backpack came first. Remember your Camp Fire Girl days? Or schlepping school books home on the bus? Well, now we say why not backpack around in a sweet and stylish manner?

These two backpack styles are super convertible. And, when you tire of backpacking around, you can adjust its straps and wear it in the traditional style of a handbag. (We love snazzy options.) And, better yet: these two styles come in tons of colors perfect for spring!

These Portland, OR designed bags are by Mosey, a company that is committed to ‘lightly’ impacting the environment in the creation of their convertible handbags/backpacks. To note: the main fabric used in their bags is derived from recycled water bottles.

**Special thanks to our neighbors at the Sellwood Umpqua bank. They always look so stylish – we are thrilled that they were game for a moment of backpack modeling!

Favor jewelry

Favor is a Portland, Oregon based jewelry design studio, founded by Monika Reed, offering delicate, timeless, and sentimental jewelry inspired by the shapes, stones, and metals found in the natural world.  Favor jewelry can be worn day to night, season to season, and year after year. And, with a good conscience behind the products, you’ll want to do just that!

With this fine line, Monika strives to create products that are neither meant to be disposable nor meant to enter the waste stream for generations, if ever. While these facts may not be apparent, they are Favor’s underlying principles.

Favor’s goal is to create pieces that are fun to touch, easy on the eyes, and friendly to the environment. All are made with natural gemstones and reclaimed, hypoallergenic, nickel-free metals such as sterling silver and 14k yellow and rose gold that are certified to be 100% recycled.

We love when designers mix the beautiful with higher, good intentions. You will, too!

Mywalit

We recently brought in so many piles and piles of these luscious wallets from Lucca, Italy that frankly, we ran out of adjectives as we endlessly unboxed them, getting them ready for display.  Almost every table in our little shop is bedecked with super soft and colorful Mywalits! In every shape and size, we’ve got ladies wallets, men’s bifold wallets, card cases, coin purses in sizes from super size to teeny tiny – we could be the new wallet HQ of the Northwest. Or, at least Sellwood.

Stop by and feel their soft goodness, see their wonderful hues, and set off with a few for the giving.
