Pigeon Toe Ceramics

Design lovers in the crowd may have long been wondering “Why the heck isn’t Pigeon Toe Ceramics at Tilde?!” (Peppered, perhaps, with some vibrant language, for added emphasis.)  Well, we’ve been wondering the same thing, as we are big time fans (i.e., HUGE) of this simply modern line of ceramics. Some more inelegant expletives are directly solely at yours truly as our ‘to do’ list had Pigeon Toe perched at the top for far too long. We’ve finally gotten it together and are bringing in some classic pieces from this local power house. Whew!

Is this ceramic line clean, simple, functional, and beautiful? Check. Lisa, the designer/creator states “Our designs are naturally imperfect, casually irreverent, and playfully charming. Each piece is treasured. Beautiful. Authentically hand-crafted. Each object emanates enduring value. The result? Heirlooms that are hardly old-fashioned. Objects that appear discovered, rather than acquired. Objects with a vision, a purpose. A heritage. Objects with a story.”

Perfect for Tilde? Check! Perfect gift for a dear one, or perhaps for your own home decor? Check again.

Industrial Facility

Industrial Facility is the brainchild of Sam Hecht and Kim Collin, allowing them to explore the junction between industrial design and the world around us.” The team has expanded its group of designers, resulting in international recognition and awards, and products like furniture, electronics, and fashion that will surely become staples.

Equipped with a deeper design sense as well as smart business acumen, Industrial Design creates opportunities that result in products with a certain clarity, sparking further investigation.

We like Industrial Facility’s sense of style – especially when that style renders itself in colorful, chunky, and simple objects. Note the clocks and calculators that we’ve added to our store line-up of faves this spring – your soon-to-be favorites, too!

New York Gift Show – latest and greatest!

Just returned from snowy and icy New York City where I scoped out the newest, most exciting new designs for the year. This is always the most fun show to attend – it’s just too bad that the northeast has getting hit by snowstorm after snowstorm this winter. Verified: The go-to word for weather forecasters across the country is “snowmageddon”.

Is it possible to pack light and bring a heavy winter coat and gigantic snow boots? Done, and done.

In the meantime, here are a few inspirational pictures of products that we hope to bring into Tilde in the next few months. Tried to take more pics, but kept getting distracted by all the cool products. Enjoy!

Stewart/Stand stainless steel wallets

We LOVE Stewart/Stand! We’ve ‘stewarded’ their line in Portland for over three years and many a savvy Portland man now carry their flat-profile steel wallet to safeguard their valuables (not THOSE valuables!).

Stewart/Stand is a Brooklyn-based product design company, distributor, manufacturer, and retailer dedicated to reinventing men’s gifts, furniture, and other functional design objects.  Founded by brothers Theo and Paul Stewart-Stand in 2002, this design firm has gained a reputation for producing innovative men’s accessories. Theo (the designer of the family) creates a vast line of men’s wallets that include bi-fold, tri-fold, driving, money clips, and a number of other sweet styles and items.

A reoccurring compact and sustainable theme makes Stewart/Stand a relevant choice for the modern eco-conscious retail customer. A major force of their design is to create “low-tech solutions to complex and every day concerns”. Think: “Minimal Input, Maximum Output.”

The most popular example of this approach is found in their woven stainless steel wallet. The ultra thin, silky to the touch wallets are composed of a specialized industrial stainless steel fabric used in petroleum processing and countless other industries. The contemporary fabric is durable and resistant to corrosive materials such as salts, acids, and seawater. These amazing wallets also turn identity security into a choice of fabric as they prevent credit card fraud by blocking non-deliberate communication by RFID enabled smart card sand passports.

Stewart/Stand places particular focus on the experiential attributes of their designs. Each stainless steel wallet is packaged in a custom wooden box with magnetic closure and contains the description of the design and the material. Grab some for your man today!

Graf & Lantz felt totes, bowls, and more!

Gräf & Lantz is a Los Angeles based design studio founded by Holger Gräf and Daniel Lantz. The duo creates products that are “luxurious, aware, and functional” with  high quality 100% merino wool felt that they import from Germany and then utilize within their handmade creations in their Los Angeles studio.

Tilde has many of their products in store, like card cases and bowls, in vibrant fall colors perfect for the upcoming gift-giving season.

Gräf & Lantz products combine felt with other natural materials to highlight felt’s “deep rich colors and unique texture”.  The high quality/density felt is super durable and pill resistant which also possesses “a sculptural quality that influences and inspires the structure and form” of the designs.

Holger has a PhD in engineering from world renowned Technische Universität in Munich, Germany. This background has influenced his design sense that focuses on “modern lines and structural aesthetics”. The other part of the equation is Daniel who was heavily influenced by a 10-year stint in Japan at Otaru Shoka Daigaku. Daniel’s design ideals combine “traditional understated luxury and modern techniques”.

Given this rich international background, their keen combination of elements from the east and west, it’s no wonder Gräf & Lantz continue to produce amazing concepts and designs for the rest of us to enjoy.

Dinah Coops designs

Seattle-lite Dinah Coops is inspired by the naturally beautiful aesthetic of the Northwest, and this sensibility shows in her designs. Though sometimes rough, "beautiful nature, colors, openness, diversity, how everything is so unpolished" are elements that guide her work, one that allows nature to be "an immediate, visual and physical part of our lives."

Dinah's unique background in art direction and design influences her design decisions. Her collections smartly combine "elements of surface design, utility, and environmental sustainability" with particular attention to on more abstract elements of "practicality, honesty, appreciation for quality, avoidance of waste" for beautiful, positive impact.

Part of this positive impact manifests in paying close attention to her own business practices, a key feature for many (most? all?) of us in the Pacific Northwest. Always looking toward efficiency in all areas, she uses locally sourced and made less toxic, recycled or quickly renewable materials whenever possible to create lasting items.

Dinah's work spans art, clothing, table pieces like place mats and coasters, and linens and jewelry. Quite an array, indeed! We know you'll love her work as much as we do. Currently, we're featuring many of her sweet necklaces and tees. Check out Dinah's amazing designs in the shop today.

materious: sweet porcelain piggies are here

The high concept, high design duo that is materious brings us all to a higher plane with artifacts from our world that inspire and delight. With international exhibitions, awards, and press, materious is a force to be reckoned with.

Tilde now possesses the must-have gift of the season: Piggy, a philanthropic piggy bank set for kids of all ages. The minimalist design made of hand-cast ceramic is presented in two savings banks (pink or white) that nest together. The larger “momma Piggy” bank is for your child’s personal savings while the smaller bank is for your child’s charitable savings (or, vice versa!).

The cool people at materious believe that this modern, elegant set can truly help raise awareness and make the world a more compassionate place, as “Piggy helps teach kids about charitable giving, with the hopes of inspiring new generations of caring, sharing, philanthropic citizens”. This conscientious design team notes that “with 12,000 children born each day in the US, imagine the social impact if just a fraction of them learned powerful lessons of gratefulness and kindness to others”. We wholeheartedly agree. Parents can suggest that children set aside 10% of their savings for others, teach them about giving, philanthropy, and altruism, and empower them to make decisions about recipients of their gift.

Perfect for that special someone, perfect for the upcoming gift giving season, the Piggy set ships safely in a fun “quote box” with powerful favorites like:

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.  The Dalai Lama

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.  Winston Churchill

I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver. Maya Angelou

It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it. Albert Einstein

Claim your piggy duo while they’re in the shop! The designer’s sold out of these guys quickly so once they are gone, they are gone for the rest of the year.

Gauge NYC: Modern Metal Letters

Gauge NYC’s metal letters and sculptures are the perfect addition to the home of a design enthusiast. Their snappy line shows the range of what can be created with metal—inspired by smart design.

Gauge NYC specifically focuses on fonts, and we love a good font! Our personal favorite is the Empire Letter, one of the iconic mid-century fonts that appeal to those who appreciate the style connected to a long lost decade of signature American design sensibility (and a precursor to Mad Men).

Gauge NYC was founded by Paul Smotrys, a self-taught artist focusing on sculpture presenting opposing properties of metals (“hard/soft, sharp/smooth, immediate/laborious”). The pieces Smotrys creates for Gauge are inspired by beauty, art, industry, and metals. The artist merges these elements to create forms that are elegant, stylized, and compelling.

Sleek strips of aluminum are fashioned into a mid-century font—letters, numbers, words—to display in a home and office, or to present to a friend for a birthday, house warming, or wedding celebration. Your home decor can gleam with clean lines and smooth, shiny letters from Gauge NYC.

We know many of you out there (and in our store) are lovers of the written word, appreciators of the perfect font and clean lines of the mid-century style that reflects the architects, designers, artists of the times. We look forward to sharing our love of such sweet elements, too.

New York Gift Show

Even as we are enjoying the sweet rays of summer, now is the time for shop owners, such as us, to seek out new items for fall & winter (gasp). This last week we traveled to NY for the big gift show. This year's show was full of amazing goodness and we picked up a ton of new items that will fill our shop wall to wall through the end of the year. Here's a sneak peak at some of our finds!

'Piggy' from Materious.  This design is a set of two piggy bank, big & little or parent & child, that fit snuggly next to each other. More than just a bank, these piggies serve as a great way to talk to your child about donating to charity, instilling the values of thinking globally in a really sweet way.  The designers state " We believe that this simple product, Piggy, can truly make the world a better and more compassionate place. Piggy helps teach kids about charitable giving, with the hopes of inspiring new generations of caring, sharing, philanthropic citizens."

LOVED these porcelain bowl sets complete with stainless steel spoon designed by Ineke Hans of Royalvkb from The Netherlands. These come in a boxed set of two and are a great gift!

Robots! From our friends at Digs, who work with different artists around the world with a  commitment to eco- conscious manufacturing, economic development, fair trade, fair wages, as well as quality design. These robots are made from all recycled material and would rule in any home.

The sweetest little charm necklaces from Odette of Brooklyn, NY. Each charm is handmade by designer Jennifer Sarkilahti in her New York studio. Mushrooms, birds, bees and more!
