August feature artist preview: Lisa Kaser
We have long been looking forward to this upcoming First Friday reception for the Portland artist Lisa Kaser from 6pm to 9pm on Friday, August 5th.
Kaser is a favorite at Tilde, and in Portland, and this summer show will present her recent small-scale sculptural work in mixed media. “Flyers, thinkers, gazers, peekers, floaters, seekers, and those taking a moment to enjoy the moment” are the starring characters from her newest creations. Each creature is made from found and fabricated materials like oak gauls (balls) and carved wood, restitched and recycled cloth, handmade wool felt, and natural beeswax. Finer elements are used for features on these unique characters such as tiny shells and shell pieces for teeth. All are mounted atop traditional wooden sake cups.
Full-time artist Kaser was born and raised in Portland and continues to enjoy living and working in the Emerald City where the nearly ever-present rain awakens her creative channels. (Rarely is there a moment when her imagination isn’t firing on all cylinders!) She received formal training and a degree in off-loom textiles at University of Oregon in 1984, and continued to expand upon her interests in illustration, painting, and three-dimensional work that capitalize on the use of mixed materials. She is currently engaged in illustrating her second children’s book, The Mice’s Wedding, for the Spanish Publisher OQO Editora.
This sculpture show runs through Tuesday, August 30th. Come meet the artist and the main creatures of her latest fanciful collection!

Cathy McMurray art reception tomorrow night!
We hope you can join us tomorrow night (Friday), from 6-9pm, as we host an artist’s reception for Cathy McMurray. We’ve just finished hanging her show and predict her artwork will find homes very quickly! Her work is a gorgeous mix of deep, saturated colors often depicting landscapes that feel cozy and representative of where we are happy to live: Oregon.
We’ll have have wine and nibbles on hand so hope you can stop by! If not, Cathy’s show will be on walls throughout July and many of her pieces are available on our online site as well.

July feature artist preview: Cathy McMurray
Our July art reception for the Portland artist Cathy McMurray will be Friday, July 1st from 6-9pm. The show runs through Sunday, July 31st.
Pieces presented in the July show are mixed media works spanning multiple art disciplines including drawing, painting, photography, and embroidery. The artist is conscious about using materials that are “easy on the environment” so viewers will see wood panels that are locally made and sourced, paper created from sugar cane by-product, and recycled cotton fibers among other conscientious art supply choices.
Cathy McMurray launched her art career in the fall of 2009. Prior to this, she taught high school art for ten years in the public school system and operated an arts focused shop in Portland. She studied art at Willamette University with an emphasis on printmaking, and holds a masterʼs degree in arts education.
This native Portland artist is inspired by the surrounding beautiful scenery, with the great mountains and open sea representing unchanging elements as constant forces in her life and work. Although many of her works are inspired by recent travels throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond, Cathy captures nature scenes that almost transcend time. We think you’ll enjoy these views, too!

June feature artist preview: Jennifer Mercede
Our June art reception for the Portland artist Jennifer Mercede will be Friday, June 3rd from 6-9pm. The show runs through Tuesday, June 28th.
This upcoming show features Jennifer Mercede’s freshest work mixing and matching her spontaneous, frenetic doodling, with soft, delicate drawings. Popping neon corals on neutral browns, and mixed grays with all shades of purple will surely delight the spring/summer senses!
Inspired by her free-spirited grandmother, a watercolorist, Jennifer spent hours creating handmade, floral cards as a child, and channeled this love of art into her painting studies at Western Washington University, and into her profession as a Portland artist. Jennifer’s work is also known internationally.
Inspired, too, by color (and how different colors interplay and interconnect), children’s art, graffiti, and her creative friends, Jennifer likes to take risks in her work, believing that there’s no such thing as a mistake. She wants others to be inspired by and enjoy this exploration, too.

Rachel Austin & Sam Tudyk Art Reception tomorrow night!
The art show collaboration – Carto Mapo – of Rachel Austin and Sam Tudyk is ready for its big reveal tomorrow night, Friday May 6th, from 6-9pm.

Inspired by their love of maps, Austin’s work showcases local areas such as Sauvie Island, the Willamette River, and the Columbia River offering viewers painted maps that are both recognizable and abstract. Her thickly layered acrylic paintings use parts of actual maps, bold colors, and graphic shapes.
Tudyk’s paintings mimic common elements seen in maps but also add a unique dimension incorporating typography and the human form. Painted with acrylic on unstretched canvas and framed to hang like old wall maps, her paintings feel familiar while demanding closer attention.

Our May First Friday reception for the Portland artists Rachel Austin and Sam Tudyk happens from 6pm to 9pm on Friday, May 6th. The show runs through Tuesday, May 31st.

Austin and Tudyk present a unique dual show—CARTO MAPO—inspired by their love of maps. Austin is a Portland artist whose work is inspired by crisp moments of beauty, maps, and color. This full time and self taught artist has shown her paintings across the country. Her work is also featured on design blogs such as Design*Sponge and Apartment Therapy. Tudyk is constantly inspired by and enjoys painting typography, nature, and symbols of communication. A 2001 graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, Tudyk has a BFA in Illustration and a BFA in Graphic Design. She currently works as a full-time studio artist at the advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy.

Trish Grantham Art Reception Tonight!
Trish Grantham worked wonders on our wall yesterday and single handedly displayed all of her artwork for tonight’s show. Obviously she’s got the merchandising eye. Seriously, is this one cool wall of art or what?! Trish’s combo of layering vintage book pages with acrylic paint equals the best visual art show you’ll see this month. April Feature Artist Preview: Trish Grantham
Tilde will host a First Friday reception for the Portland artist Trish Grantham from 6pm to 9pm on Friday, April 1st. The show runs through Saturday, April 30th.
Trish Grantham works with a variety of media including acrylic, gouache, resin, and watercolor on wood panels. Layering vintage book pages (favorites come from Japan), she paints bold lines mixed with a soft translucent color palette to create a unique mix of design elements. Her work pulls the viewer in while a sweet story featuring fanciful characters unfolds, providing the audience with a quick glimpse inside her imagination. And, hers is quite a wonderful world to get lost in—at the same time both sweet and complex with a style sensibility demonstrated through various layers that will surely live on for years to come.
Trish has showcased her work all over the United States, Tokyo, London, and Sydney, and is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Portland, Oregon. The artistic design aesthetic she brings to her work fits in perfectly with the style sensibility that is Tilde.
