Jen Pearson’s apothecary matchstick bottles

Jen Pearson's sleek apothecary matchstick bottles are in the house – and you'll certainly want one (or two!) to adorn your home or give as a sweet gift this fall.
Jen's an Oakland-based industrial designer with a background as a museum preparator and a digital media producer, and is equipped with a degree from the famed California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Her main interest is in human centered design, which "tries to optimize the product around how people can, want, or need to work, rather than forcing the users to change how they work."
Jen's inspiration for the matchstick bottles came from "fulfilling a personal need." Engaged in creating a holiday alter with photos or her loved ones, candles, and special trinkets, she wanted to have matches nearby in a special container to fit the beautiful scene she was creating. Her ah-ha! moment? Put the matches in an elegant glass bottle! But what about igniting the matches? The next ah-ha! was exploring the possibility of having the bottle function as a matchbox, too. Hence, the strike-able matchstick bottle was born using reclaimed apothecary bottles. (The medical industry apparently doesn't reuse glass bottles and sterilized, they can be repurposed.)
The result? A match made in heaven, of course. Jen's love for sustainable design pairs with a simple, functional aesthetic. You'll love them, too.
materious: sweet porcelain piggies are here
The high concept, high design duo that is materious brings us all to a higher plane with artifacts from our world that inspire and delight. With international exhibitions, awards, and press, materious is a force to be reckoned with.
Tilde now possesses the must-have gift of the season: Piggy, a philanthropic piggy bank set for kids of all ages. The minimalist design made of hand-cast ceramic is presented in two savings banks (pink or white) that nest together. The larger “momma Piggy” bank is for your child’s personal savings while the smaller bank is for your child’s charitable savings (or, vice versa!).
The cool people at materious believe that this modern, elegant set can truly help raise awareness and make the world a more compassionate place, as “Piggy helps teach kids about charitable giving, with the hopes of inspiring new generations of caring, sharing, philanthropic citizens”. This conscientious design team notes that “with 12,000 children born each day in the US, imagine the social impact if just a fraction of them learned powerful lessons of gratefulness and kindness to others”. We wholeheartedly agree. Parents can suggest that children set aside 10% of their savings for others, teach them about giving, philanthropy, and altruism, and empower them to make decisions about recipients of their gift.
Perfect for that special someone, perfect for the upcoming gift giving season, the Piggy set ships safely in a fun “quote box” with powerful favorites like:
If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. The Dalai Lama
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. Winston Churchill
I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver. Maya Angelou
It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it. Albert Einstein
Claim your piggy duo while they’re in the shop! The designer’s sold out of these guys quickly so once they are gone, they are gone for the rest of the year.

New York Gift Show
Even as we are enjoying the sweet rays of summer, now is the time for shop owners, such as us, to seek out new items for fall & winter (gasp). This last week we traveled to NY for the big gift show. This year's show was full of amazing goodness and we picked up a ton of new items that will fill our shop wall to wall through the end of the year. Here's a sneak peak at some of our finds!
'Piggy' from Materious. This design is a set of two piggy bank, big & little or parent & child, that fit snuggly next to each other. More than just a bank, these piggies serve as a great way to talk to your child about donating to charity, instilling the values of thinking globally in a really sweet way. The designers state " We believe that this simple product, Piggy, can truly make the world a better and more compassionate place. Piggy helps teach kids about charitable giving, with the hopes of inspiring new generations of caring, sharing, philanthropic citizens."
LOVED these porcelain bowl sets complete with stainless steel spoon designed by Ineke Hans of Royalvkb from The Netherlands. These come in a boxed set of two and are a great gift!
Robots! From our friends at Digs, who work with different artists around the world with a commitment to eco- conscious manufacturing, economic development, fair trade, fair wages, as well as quality design. These robots are made from all recycled material and would rule in any home.
The sweetest little charm necklaces from Odette of Brooklyn, NY. Each charm is handmade by designer Jennifer Sarkilahti in her New York studio. Mushrooms, birds, bees and more!

Tilde Welcomes Miki and Nora Jewelry
There's nothing like a good old fashioned golden nugget! This one just happens to be handmade, and even though its not 'solid' gold, we love it nonetheless. We have added a new designer to the Tilde ranks: Miki Christopherson. Her line Miki and Nora focuses on simple geometric shapes fabricated in silver, oxidized silver and antiqued gold.
Lovely, precious and refreshing clean design. Her pieces strike me as the everyday 'basic' that are far more fetching than anything basic, and eventually end up being one of your favorites. Nugget or Pyramid? Or perhaps Octahedron…

Leah Nobilette Ceramics
Leah Nobilette, a Portland OR ceramic artist (and our good friend!), developed her extremely popular line of hand-made spiked bowls and vases when finishing her college thesis in 2004. We don’t know anyone that can walk by one of Leah’s ceramic pieces without reaching out to touch them. This unique product line is not just functional, but uniquely decorative and pleasingly tactile. The fragile-looking spiky exteriors are surprisingly sturdy and dishwasher safe.
Leah is a new mom to a beautiful little girl! On top of that, she has just completed relocating her ceramic studio into her home to make it a tad easier to create whenever she can steal a moment or two away from her baby. Aware of all this, we were amazed that she was recently able to restock us with more of her vases. How she found the time is a feat of the unknown. Thank you Leah!

Artecnica Dada Alarm Clock
We’ve just received the highly covetable Dada Clock in Clear from Artecnica. The Dada Clock is surely one of the most cool tabletop alarm clocks ever, with it’s warped angle on viewing time (though easy to read if viewed straight on). The hand polished egg shape was designed to recall the essence of surrealism, which it successfully achieves with it’s warped angles when viewed from any side except the front. Also available in Amber and Aqua.
You can click here to buy them through our online shop.

Urubbu Cards & Prints
When we first opened Tilde, almost 4 years ago (!), we were contacted by Geraldo and Craig of Urubbu who had recently moved to Canada. They had been living in Portland and, we think, were missing our beautiful city just a tad. They sent us down photos of their gorgeous cards, successfully baiting us with the colorful images. Geraldo is the creator of this unique line of stationery. He makes each as an original collage out of recycled paper and then screens the finished artwork resulting in this line of cards and prints that have almost a storybook feel.
Seeing all this work in person at the National Stationery Show this week, and talking with Geraldo and Craig, has us on a mission to bring these beauties back into the shop this summer. Stay tuned!

Dara Ettinger Geode Rings! Sparkly!
They’re back!! We’ve restocked the amazing Geode Rings by Dara Ettinger in a ton of different colors. All of these unusual rocks have sparked our interest and we wanted to know more about the origin of geodes. Sounds like almost any rock can become a geode if the situation is right-sort of like the making of a pearl within an oyster’s cavity. Each one is unique which makes even more special. Definitely a step up from your typical cocktail ring!
A geode is “a small, hollow, usually rounded rock lined on the inside with inward-pointing crystals. Geodes form when mineral-rich water entering a cavity in a rock undergoes a sudden change in pressure or temperature, causing crystals to form from the solution and line the cavity’s walls.”
