Kobo Candles – The Ribbon Collection
We are suckers for a candle, especially as the weather changes to chilly. Lighting a good candle lets us feel as if we are pampering ourselves. The Ribbon Collection from KOBO is a delight for those who enjoy a beautifully designed product. The packaging alone is so beautiful that you’ll not want to wrap them when giving as gifts. Kobo candles are made of domestically grown sustainable soybeans which creates the cleanest burning wax and a notable, yet not exceedingly strong, level of fragrance. Cotton wicks provide a pure and clean flame. KOBO candles are not only created using environmentally friendly materials but also they do not pollute the home!
KOBO was created in 2006 by Junko Kobori. Originally from Kumamoto in southern Japan, she and her husband spent many years traveling the world before settling in Saratoga Springs, NY. Junko was always struck by the scent of each place, and how absent those fragrances were when viewing a photo of a favorite location. While reminiscing on her travels, Junko noted that the specific aroma of a place was still very present to her memory. She came to realize that fragrance is one of the key elements to bringing any environment to life, and it is the most often overlooked. Junko began creating scents for her own home that would be as equally memorable to her family and guests as the paintings on the walls, or flavors of the food served. From this the KOBO range was born.

Urubbu handcarved birds
We have long loved the folk-like artwork created by Geraldo of Urubbu. In addition to Urubbu’s sweet and colorful images (sold as cards and prints in our shop) the gentlemen of Urubbu have been sourcing some of the most beautiful hand-carved and painted birds directly from the artisan in South America.

Antonio lives in a small village in Brazil, where he supports his family through his craft. Each one of these birds are hand-carved and painted from discarded and reclaimed wood. They are all unique. We want them all – these little guys are more than a pop of color for your rooms – these birdies will become your friends and companions. We are already imaging them above our mantle and on our dresser……

Jolby
Illustration for inspiration rules at Jolby. This Portland based collaborative design and illustration studio is the mastermind of Josh Kenyon and Colby Nichols, two art institute (San Diego) illustrators who became fast friends in 2005. With illustration work showcased in galleries all over the world, the two talents work as art directors, designers, and illustrators to delight the masses.
Colby’s artistic obsession with creatures and characters combines with Josh’s love for color, pattern, and texture to create magic, memorable stories. The dynamic duo’s main goal? To make us smile.
You surely will when you pop into Tilde and see what they’ve got to offer!

Chewing the Cud
Chewing the Cud is a creative paper and textile-based design studio out of San Francisco. They celebrate things unique, often bold and dramatic, other times soft as a whisper, and sometimes playful like a hint of spice. The end result is always a kaleidoscope of inspired possibilities, exactly how the creatives at this studio view their world. “Chewing the Cud defines that moment of meditation before taking a calculated leap. For the most part, we remember to bring our wings.”
Key designer Viola has a varied path that led her to adventures geared for creativity. With a degree in business and a background in banking she somehow ended up at California College of the Arts focused on fashion. Her natural sense of play, adventurous spirit, and curiosity keeps her mind open, an element Viola deems “crucial to self-growth.” This sensibility lives on through her endeavor, Chewing the Cud.
We fell in love with their new fabric buckets printed on recycled canvas cotton using soy-based inks. In sizes large and small, the storage and display potential is endless.

Figs & Ginger’s Eco-Fresh Appeal
Ecofriendly metalsmithing inspired by forests? This is Figs & Ginger, a line of jewelry we’ve been carrying for some time now. Their whimsical shapes from nature (animals, leaves, trees) adorn earrings and necklaces, and bring a smile to all.
The creative couple that is Figs & Ginger (Rhonda and Elijah) has been operating for many years out of various sheds, trailers, and rooms at their Asheville, North Carolina home. They’ve recently migrated north, to Massachusetts, but are still cranking out the cool designs.
We’ve got some new jewelry designs in house for you to oooh and ahhh over, and we’ve also got their new cool wooden letters that can be strung together like a banner, adding hip rustic style to your home surroundings.
We’re certain you’ll love this bird family necklace (we have versions with one, two and three little ones) made from 50% recycled silver with a unique blackened patina. Perfect for mom on mother’s day this spring, too!

April Feature Artist Preview: Trish Grantham
Tilde will host a First Friday reception for the Portland artist Trish Grantham from 6pm to 9pm on Friday, April 1st. The show runs through Saturday, April 30th.
Trish Grantham works with a variety of media including acrylic, gouache, resin, and watercolor on wood panels. Layering vintage book pages (favorites come from Japan), she paints bold lines mixed with a soft translucent color palette to create a unique mix of design elements. Her work pulls the viewer in while a sweet story featuring fanciful characters unfolds, providing the audience with a quick glimpse inside her imagination. And, hers is quite a wonderful world to get lost in—at the same time both sweet and complex with a style sensibility demonstrated through various layers that will surely live on for years to come.

Trish has showcased her work all over the United States, Tokyo, London, and Sydney, and is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Portland, Oregon. The artistic design aesthetic she brings to her work fits in perfectly with the style sensibility that is Tilde.
We love her work and are certain you will too!

Jen Pearson’s apothecary matchstick bottles

Jen Pearson's sleek apothecary matchstick bottles are in the house – and you'll certainly want one (or two!) to adorn your home or give as a sweet gift this fall.
Jen's an Oakland-based industrial designer with a background as a museum preparator and a digital media producer, and is equipped with a degree from the famed California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Her main interest is in human centered design, which "tries to optimize the product around how people can, want, or need to work, rather than forcing the users to change how they work."
Jen's inspiration for the matchstick bottles came from "fulfilling a personal need." Engaged in creating a holiday alter with photos or her loved ones, candles, and special trinkets, she wanted to have matches nearby in a special container to fit the beautiful scene she was creating. Her ah-ha! moment? Put the matches in an elegant glass bottle! But what about igniting the matches? The next ah-ha! was exploring the possibility of having the bottle function as a matchbox, too. Hence, the strike-able matchstick bottle was born using reclaimed apothecary bottles. (The medical industry apparently doesn't reuse glass bottles and sterilized, they can be repurposed.)
The result? A match made in heaven, of course. Jen's love for sustainable design pairs with a simple, functional aesthetic. You'll love them, too.
