Amy Wing Designs
We have always, always, always loved Amy’s jewelry designs, but were even more impressed with this designer’s newest line – and, Amy’s new Venetian Shadow Collection does not disappoint! The shapes and tones and metals mixed in this new collection are based on the Venetian iron work Amy discovered on a trip to Italy last summer. (Remember summer?)
Along the canals of Venice, Amy found beautiful examples of decorative iron work gates, grates, doors, and windows. Inspired by these centuries-old designs her current collection plays with the concepts of light, dark, shape, and form and connects all in pieces that offer perfect palate for winter.

Used in quilt making for hundreds of years, Shanalee has refashioned this traditional craft item with a modern spin for today.
We are thrilled to see this inventive artist setting up shop in Portland. Her pretty necklaces are going fast, stop by the shop today to grab your favorite color combo!

Polli’s newest collaboration: Emma van Leest
This Aussi jewelry line has always been one of our very favorites. We just love how Polli collaborates with other artists who work in different mediums, expertly translating it into their own unique stainless steel jewelry. Polli’s latest collaboration features our newest crafty obsession: papercutting. So cool.
Melbourne-based paper cutting artist Emma van Leest designed exclusive paper cuts just for Polli. The pieces are incredibly intricate – with whimsical scenes of high seas adventures to exotic new lands to fantasmagorical pineapples, dodo birds, crowns, and wacky combinations of all these design elements, too.

Yellow Owl Workshop
If you know Yellow Owl Workshop, you know their work is perfect for the Tilde enthusiast with limited edition paper goods and other choice items perfect for us and our friends. We’ve been eye-spying the incredible work from this design house for some time – but just have trouble making decisions (you know how that is!). When we discovered these adorable necklaces (perfect with a casual tee or fancy pants outfit), we just had to say yes, yes, yes!
Sweet designs of the rainbow, beehive, and color wheel are lovingly fashioned into refined pieces gilded in luminous 22-karat gold, and adorned with the ancient metalworking technique called Cloisonné. Tiny crevices etched in the surface of the pendant, called cloisons, are expertly filled with different colors of richly pigmented paste. A kiln fire process transforms the loose mixtures into deep hues of hard enamel. The surface is then filed, sanded, and buffed to an exquisite shine and individually packaged in glass vials with cork and gold foil stamped inserts.
Christine Schmidt, who handles the designs, received her BFA from the Corcoran School of Art and has exhibited wondrous works across the US. Evan Gross, her husband, handles just about everything else. We’re happy to handle these perfect necklaces in the shop for you to soon handle around your lovely necks!

Sahlia Michelle Jewelry
We are happy to be overflowing with new styles from the local jewelry designer Sahlia Michelle. Her unique and sexy combination of traditional metal smith techniques with modern designs and materials allow for the most gorgeous, drapey designs to emerge from her Portland, Oregon studio.
Raw semi-precious gemstones, hand-pounded sterling silver, and her signature recycled molten silver droplets are the core elements of the Sahlia Jewelry Collection. The business is based, too, on sustainable practices that manifest in all aspects of the jewelry-making process, from concept to finished piece. All materials are purchased locally from environmentally/socially responsible sources, including reused and recycled whenever possible.
Beautiful, elegant, unique jewelry with a conscience is super sexy – and, super sexy on you this summer, for certain!

Miel-Margarita Paredes trunk show and sale
June 17th & 18th – Friday & Saturday
Meet the artist: Saturday, June 18th from 1:00 to 4:00pm
Miel-Margarita Paredes is a local Portland metalsmith who spends her days making posable steel armatures for stop motion animation puppets and her “free time” creating gorgeous stainless steel jewelry that is truly art you can wear.
Her love of metal began in high school in Madison, Wisconsin when she took her first jewelry making class. She has since earned both her BFA and MFA degrees in metalsmithing, and works in her home studio where she creates metal sculpture and jewelry. Her stainless steel jewelry, Emmeline, combines her love for pattern and ornament with her fascination with kinetics.
Miel-Margarita’s sculpture can be seen at www.mielmargarita.com. Her work has also been published in the books 500 Metal Vessels and 500 Enameled Objects.
At the June 18th show, Miel-Margartia will present the full range of her stainless steel jewelry line including new designs created just for us (and you!) that involve forged copper and brass.
When you purchase a piece from Miel-Margarita’s jewelry line during this show, you’ll be entered in a drawing to win this Emmeline stainless steel necklace!

Erica Weiner Jewelry
This is a line of jewelry that will make you smile, in a hipster kind of way. Porcupine quills, re-cast hummingbird skulls and tons of dead-stock vintage charms all combined for a look that defines you as one unique person.
Erica Weiner began designing and making jewelry out of her New York City apartment in 2005. Before that, she honed her design and production skills as a theatrical costumer and samplemaker in the fashion industry.
Over the years and throughout her travels, she gathered a collection of curiosities which she has used to develop a line of jewelry with an emphasis on craftsmanship and affordability. The collection grew exponentially, as did her fan base. There seemed to be a never-ending demand for handmade, affordable vintage-inspired jewelry, designed with a sense of humor.
All handmade in New York (always, now, and forever!) Erica Weiner Jewelry can now be found in shops around the world (and now in Portland!), and continues to grow fast, but still operates as a grassroots, co-operative company.
In 2007, Erica and co-founder Lindsay Salmon moved the studio into a sun-filled workspace on Chrystie Street. Together they travel around the country, searching out interesting materials to transform into new jewelry. A team of trusted friends carry out almost every aspect of the business in-house. The company’s biz and environmental policies are smart – with health care for employees, packing and packaging from reused/recyclable materials, 90% post-consumer paper. About half of the jewelry materials are vintage, dead stock, and re-purposed. The company also offsets 300% of its carbon output through www.carbonfund.org. And, 5% of all after-tax profits from Erica Weiner Jewelry are donated to charities.

Artist Interview: Francine Staczek of 1480 degrees
The fused glass jewelry of 1480 degrees has been an anchor in our shop since we opened. We’ve always loved her modern color palette and simple graphic lines, all clean and contemporary. The creator, designer, and quite amazing person behind this jewelry line is Francine Staczek who fortunately lives near Tilde. We felt it was about time to sit down with her for a fun interview.
Tell us a little about your background (education, studies, travels) and how you got to be where you are now.
My path to working with glass was not direct. I studied journalism in college and worked for nearly ten years in public relations. But I’ve always had some form of creative outlet, and while I stayed home with my two young daughters I bought a kiln and began to experiment with glass.
Why glass?
I was initially attracted to glass by its light transforming qualities. I’m continually amazed when I see my jewelry worn against the skin. The transparent nature of the glass transforms the piece and it becomes and extension of the individual.
What kind of sources do you draw on for inspiration (e.g., other artists, locations, the natural world, your own life/experiences)?
I draw a lot on the seasons, my moods, and the natural world. However, I like very simple, uncomplicated designs that are very unlike the natural work and are much more architectural.
Tell us a little about your process, how you create your work, and why your company is called 1480 degrees?
I heat the kiln to 1480 degrees to melt the glass – and usually hold it there for anywhere from one to ten minutes depending on what type of piece is in the kiln.
What tools are necessary for creating your work?
The kiln is the most important and biggest part of my toolkit. Everything else is relatively small – a few glass cutters, special pliers, jewelry making supplies, etc. It also helps to have a large supply of glass in a lot of lovely colors and a big area to lay everything out in.
Are you continually experimenting with color schemes, or do you know what works and what doesn’t?
It’s a constant trial and error. And sometimes it works and I find a great new combination and sometimes it’s awful. Glass looks different before it’s fired, so you can’t always tell what it will look like until it’s out of the kiln. Plus it can react with the metal in the jewelry, so that’s another factor to consider.
Where do you work? Do you have a studio or anyone to help you?I have a studio at home and a kiln in my garage. I have two helpers, a 9-year-old and an 11-year-old, who like to organize my small glass pieces.
What artist(s) do you most admire and why?
My favorite artist is Mark Rothko. I love his use of color and simple abstraction.
Do you work with any other mediums, or do you create anything else with your fused glass other than what we carry here (necklaces, rings, barrettes, earrings)?
Other mediums I work with include painting, block printing, and collage. I make a lot of fused glass projects that Tilde doesn’t carry like wall hangings, bowls, platters, plates, and more.
What advice do you have for young artists trying to find their way out there?
It’s cliché, but true: experiment and don’t be afraid to try new things.
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m experimenting with making bowls from thin strips of glass. They’re more sculptural than functional.
