Candyspotting

You know we just love all sorts of paper products – so you also can guess how happy we were when we stumbled upon a fab paper designer from our very own hood. Not just a paper designer, but a paper cutter. Sounds dangerous? It’s not. It’s cutting-edge cool!

Candyspotting is the business of Sarah Holbrook (currently operating out of a home workshop in our very own Portland), who grew up on a small island near Vancouver surrounded by dreamers and artists. After earning her BSc in computer science she spent six years in the Bay Area working with a variety of artists. Returning to the Pacific Northwest to start a family, she launched Candyspotting in 2009 which combines her love of technology and art, beautifully connected in all pieces she creates.

Leah Duncan colorful cards

Tilde is pleased to bring Leah Duncan‘s line of cards into shop this first month of the new year. TONS of cards. Leah – a native of South Carolina who now resides in Austin, Texas – boasts an interesting self-made arts background in illustration, design, and textiles, with a degree in commercial printing. Her whimsical, creative, vibrant work has propelled her to the national art scene that has been eating up her innovative textile designs.

To introduce Portland to Leah’s original artwork, Tilde showcased ten of Leah’s designs in our December show last year. Her beautiful, colorful cards feature reproductions of her pencil and mixed media originals. Though we have previously carried some of her cards in store, we are now investing in a larger body of her work – for her keen artistic sensibility, creative approach to elements of modern design, and, well, just cuz we like it all. All!

Look for more cool products and designs from Leah that will surely tickle your fancy in store come February (think: pillows!).

Kamal: Art on Paper

Another installment from the National Stationary Show. The Kamal line is based in Richmond, Virginia and produced 100% in our fair nation using 100% luxurious cotton paper or 100% kraft chipboard with 100% PC kraft envelopes! Needless to say, we are 100% in love…

These cards are just plain amazing: gorgeous colors, simple elegant design with sumptuous paper and letterpress printing to boot! We are totally smitten with her cards, but she also creates wrapping paper, coasters and custom invites as well.

Stop in for a peak; we have lots of different colors and designs. Is there someone you have been meaning to send a card to? Receiving a handwritten note is divine!  Or, if you are on the hunt for something lovely to frame, a few of these cards would look cheerful in any room.

Urubbu: We’ve got it!

Send a lighthearted paper collage card today. ( I just sent one to my Grandmother!) We have been awaiting our order since we saw Urubbu at the Stationary Show earlier this year. Now, I am happy to report that all these fine animals and many more are available in the shop.

Wild Pulp

One of the standouts from the National Stationery Show was the paper line Wild Pulp from Cleveland, OH. Once back from our NY stationery spree, we immediately placed an order for these creative cards and are happy to report that they are now available at Tilde.

Wild Pulp is the newly conceived brainchild of Christopher Smith who is an alum of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Columbus College of Art and Design.  Though it was hard to choose, our favorite Wild Pulp line (at this moment) is the North American Mammals in bark.

Christopher has designed real animals, for Wild Pulp, there are no cutsy humanized creatures in this bunch. The different types of bark that Christopher has chosen truly fits each animal’s spirit.

Ok, this little meadow mouse is pretty cute!

Christopher has also designed a separate collection (called Bright Souls) of vulnerable, threatened, endangered and recovered North American Animals. These stately animals are represented quite colorfully on the front of the card with the back of each card showing the animals habitat along with a bit of info on their lives.

These are such high quality, beautiful and thoughtful cards, we hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Window Love!

With a gasp and an ‘oh my’ we opened the current issue of the industry magazine Gifts and Decorative Accessories to see quite the sweet article on Tilde and our ever changing window displays. We had heard word there might be mention of our windows in this magazine after our shop received mention during a visual merchandising seminar earlier this year at the National Stationery Show. But it became something we sort of forgot about, because if you hope too hard and all . . . . .

So, we can’t say how honored we are that Linda Cahan chose to write this pretty picture article about something that we started doing just to keep our own personal creativity active and alive. Of course, our customers and neighbors love the windows as much as we do, so we’ll definitely keep them coming! Stay tuned for yet another new window display to appear next week. Think ‘day glow molecules’ in super-sized shape and form! Cryptic for now, yet once up in the windows we predict that you’ll love this window as much as your favorite from the past!

Tilde: Betsy Walton Interview + Art for Sale

Currently displayed on the walls of Tilde are seven brand new pieces of art by Portland artist Betsy Walton. We’ve always loved Betsy’s creations which pull you into a world that seems somewhat mysterious and immerse you deeply into the story dwelling within each piece. Her show has been extended to June 9th and prints are available too!  During the opening of her Tilde show a few weeks ago we asked Betsy a few ‘behind the scenes’ questions on her work.

Tell us a bit about your process in creating a body of work for a gallery showing.

First, I try to get an idea of the space I will be working in. Its helpful to get a visual, or at a minimum, the dimensions of the walls where the work will be displayed. Then I choose the how many and what size paintings I will make for the show. To start the paintings I usually lay down a wash or colored ground of some sort. This is always different, but I try to start all the pieces with a similar ground so that they are relevant to each other.  For this group, I had an idea that I wanted to work with a few goddess-like characters. I also wanted to develop an atmosphere of peaceful energy in the paintings.  I sketched out a few compositions in pencil on top of the ground, and then started the process of adding layers of color and shapes to complete the paintings.  Meanwhile, I thumbed through a book of early Christian paintings and mosaics. This ended up being an important reference for these paintings. I was really inspired by their use of gold leaf, and some of the stylized ornamental shapes and plants.  Once the major compositional elements are locked in, I spend a lot of time adding details, adjusting color, and making sure everything feels right.

For the artwork currently on display at Tilde, Betsy used acrylic gouache on wood panels. She also use a pencil here and there, but they are primarily painted. So why this choice of mediums?

I really enjoy using acrylic gouache because it provides the best of the two media in one paint. Gouache is like an extra thick chalky watercolor. It has strong pigment and a matte finish, so I can easily add pencil marks to it. The downside is that colors can bleed into each other with layers, and layering is key to my process. The acrylic binder in the paint I use allows it to be layered without bleeding, yet it is still matte and had a surface that will accept a pencil mark. And it allows me to use really saturated colors.
Betsy is working as a full-time painter and illustrator since October, 2006. The representation of her artwork out in the big world is growing. She just finished a series of prints for a collection of shoes for Keds. These are drool worthy. She did the art for three fine china plates that will be in an exhibition called Tectonic Plates at the NY Spring Tabletop Show and her artwork is showing in galleries around the country. Way to go Betsy!

Urubbu Cards & Prints

When we first opened Tilde, almost 4 years ago (!), we were contacted by Geraldo and Craig of Urubbu who had recently moved to Canada.  They had been living in Portland and, we think, were missing our beautiful city just a tad. They sent us down photos of their gorgeous cards, successfully baiting us with the colorful images. Geraldo is the creator of this unique line of stationery. He makes each as an original collage out of recycled paper and then screens the finished artwork resulting in this line of cards and prints that have almost a storybook feel.

Seeing all this work in person at the National Stationery Show this week, and talking with Geraldo and Craig, has us on a  mission to bring these beauties back into the shop this summer. Stay tuned!
