FEBRUARY FEATURED ARTIST
Jess Hirsch
Pattern and Place
Gouache and Graphite on Paper
Join us an art reception for the artist
Friday, February 5th from 6-9:00pm.
Show runs Friday, February 5th through Sunday, February 28th.
Artist on site from 6:30-8:00pm
For this show the artist focused on the implication of emblems as the signs and symbols that represent a nation, in particular national animals. In conjunction with
researching national animals, Ms. Hirsch also studied traditional patterns from around the world. The marriage of these two
subjects results in the show Pattern and Place.
“I picked at random from the 192 Nations of the world and then sought out certain animals and regional traditions. I was moved by the history of facial tattoos in
Northern Africa and applied the patterns to the Fennec Fox, the national animal of Algeria. I examined the wood grain inlay of Sri Lanka and adorned the Jungle Foul
with those patterns and colors. The intimidating Russian Bear was decorated with the painted pattern of the Matryoshka doll. Each country presented an intriguing historical tidbit to enrich the series.”
Jess Hirsch lives and works in Portland Oregon and received her Bachelors in Drawing from Lewis and Clark College in 2007. She grew up in rural Minnesota swimming
until the lake froze over and making movies in the woods. She set out for Portland in 2003 to be the near the mountains and ocean. Her work spans from delicate graphite drawing
to large-scale sculpture. She is a co-founder of Homeschool, a nomadic art gallery based in Portland, and co-creator of the Portland Healing Project, a healing workshop series and online resource
for artists and low-income families to find affordable healthcare through alternative medicine. When Jess is not sharpening pencils, she rides her bike, takes her precious Boston terrier to the park, and bakes scones.

MARCH FEATURED ARTIST
Elizabeth Bauman
Acrylics and Oils
Join us an art reception for the artist
Friday, March 5th from 6pm-9pm
Show runs Friday, March 5th through Sunday, March 28th.
The inspiration for the paintings in this show comes from the haunting images of people found on vintage photographs. The artist, while not striving to capture their
exact likeness, tries to bring to life these forgotten images. Timeless people and a fascination for beautiful colors, these paintings will strike an antique feel with
a modern edge.
“I’m endlessly fascinated with the photographs I find. Some taken within a studio and others capturing a special moment or event, they all tell me a story. I’m
especially drawn to the ones with no names, of which there seem to be thousands, as they have an even greater mystery about them.”
Elizabeth Bauman lives in Keizer, Oregon with her husband and young daughter. She received her Bachelor of Arts with a Studio Art major from Willamette University in 1993.
Her work has been featured in “The Salem Project, Volume III” in 2009 and “Downtown LA Life Magazine” in July 2009. She has recently had a piece accepted into a juried,
yearlong show in 2010, at Keizer Civic Center in Keizer, Oregon.
